Tips for First-Time Toastmaster Members

After several years at Microsoft as a project manager, Edward Anderton’s entrepreneurial mindset led him to co-found Scarlata Chocolate in 2012. Edward Anderton is an active member of Toastmasters International, an organization that helps people become more effective communicators. As a member of Toastmasters, Mr. Anderton has won several speech contests, including the District championship for Tabletopics.

Toastmasters has more than 16,000 clubs in 141 countries. The organization provides a platform for members to practice speaking and receive feedback, which puts them on a path toward more effective leadership.

First-time members of Toastmasters should be aware that speaking is not required at meetings, which typically last one or two hours. Attendees may simply observe until they feel comfortable speaking.

To make the most of a Toastmasters membership, a new member should ask an experienced member to serve as a mentor. For additional tips and resources for new members, visit www.toastmasters.org.
